Difference between the best buy and best sell price on an order book.
The spread is the cost of immediacy: it's what you pay to take liquidity from the market right now instead of waiting. Tight spreads (cents on a $50,000 BTC) signal a healthy market; wide spreads signal thin liquidity or stress.
