Layer 1 (L1)

Base blockchain — settles its own transactions natively.

Layer 1 chains run consensus and store state themselves. Examples: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Tron. L1s trade off three properties — security, decentralization, scalability — known as the 'blockchain trilemma'.
